English? I refuse to speak anything else!
We aim to equip pupils with the language skills necessary for them in their personal, social and working lives in the future. Children need to write for a wide variety of purposes and audiences. The Key Stage 3 Literacy Strategy in Years 7 and 8 ensures development of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Punctuation, spelling and grammar are essential parts of all English lessons.
Reading and learning to be critical of the media is an important part of the English curriculum and Media studies is taught in each year. The plays of Shakespeare are studied, along with other plays. Pupils have the opportunity to develop English through ICT every year.
Pupils are taught to read for practical purposes and to read fiction critically and for enjoyment. Talking and listening skills are emphasised in our work with children throughout their five years with us, and are examined as part of their GCSE assessment.
In Key Stage 3 some pupils receive one extra lesson every week in literacy skills.
