ScienceScience is a very important part in our Technology College curriculum. During Key Stage 3 all pupils follow a highly practical course which develops the skills of scientific enquiry and provides experience in all major areas of science. The course is organised into a series of units with linked themes. Within the units the pupils are assessed for their practical and scientific skills, according to the National Curriculum attainment targets. Pupils are assessed through end of unit tests and yearly examinations. Individual target setting for each pupil’s performance is now a feature of each test.

The GCSE course in Science begins after pupils have taken their Key Stage 3 SATs in Year 9. The units are based upon separate science disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and taught by specialist staff. During the two-year course pupils must produce several pieces of written coursework based on practical investigation starting in July of Year 9.

As a dual award subject at GCSE, science counts as two GCSE grades. Some pupils follow a pre-GCSE certificate in education course, which is called Science plus (accredited by the GCSE boards). All science lessons take place in the specialist accommodation.
