A Year 7 group learning about the Haiti earthquake in Geography decided to take action and write a letter to The Head, Mrs Longville, to see if the school could raise money to help the people of Haiti.
In response to the students’ letter, and the unprecedented nature of
the disaster in Haiti, the staff and pupils have decided to take
action. There are many fundraising activities happening within school;
a Penny Appeal, which has raised over £600 so far, student cake sales,
staff cake sales, Raffles - for staff, students and parents, bag
packing at Sainsbury's on the 30th January and student sponsorships.
Year 7 pupil Thomas Taylor and his mum will be doing a sponsored walk
from Oswestry to Shrewsbury on Sunday 7th February to support our
appeal. Their target is to raise £490 and at the time of going to press
they had already received over £300 in donations.
The whole fundraising week will culminate in the ‘Hats for Haiti Day’.
Richard Burbidge, The Cheese Company and BT have all agreed to work
with The Marches to raise money either by wearing a hat to work and
paying for the privilege or, where this is not possible due to the work
environment, providing an opportunity for people to donate money.
All money raised will be shared between Shelter Box and the Disaster
Emergency Committee. Shelter Box is an international disaster relief
charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people
affected by events such as the Haiti Earthquake disaster. Each Shelter
Box supplies up to 10 people with a tent and essential equipment to use
while they are displaced or homeless, at a cost of £490 a box. The
Disaster Emergency Committee is an umbrella organisation made up of 13
humanitarian aid agencies, including Oxfam, Save The Children and the
Red Cross. At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together a
unique alliance of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting
sectors to rally the nation's compassion, and ensure that funds raised
go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief
to people most in need.
The Marches would like to thank all pupils, parents, members of the
community and local businesses for being so enthusiastic with their
support for raising money for Haiti.
