An International teacher and Student Project Visit took place between May 8th to 13th 2010. Twelve teachers from schools in Italy, Germany and Turkey came to The Marches with sixteen of their students to experience the British education system and to work with some of our students in the Lifelong Learning project that began almost two years ago.
The countries represented were: Turkey, Italy and Germany.
The visit began with when Marches students accompanied our visitors to
Chester on Sunday May 9th to learn about Roman influences and the
extensive history of the city. In school on Monday 10th the teachers,
after a walk around the site with Mr O'Toole, were welcomed in the
library by the hospitality students.
Visiting students experienced many lessons and worked with ours on a
"Dialogue" project to look at how we can overcome religious differences.
The guided History of Oswestry ended with a visit to our newly elected
Lord Mayor Channon. The teachers also enjoyed many of these but had to
work together to discuss how the project had worked in our
individual schools and to make plans for the future.
The final activity, on the Wednesday evening, saw a group of year 10 and
11 students showcase musical talent for the visitors. Our
Turkish students danced for us with a specially designed act that
included some of the host students. a video produced by our
German students is available for all to see now it has been placed on
the school web site. The Lord Mayor and other guests ended the evening
by following Adem Akbiyek, the coordinator for Turkey as he showed us
all how to get involved with Turkish dancing.
1. Chester: Visiting the Roman Museum and learning gladiatorial skills.
Our visit to Chester allowed us to share our Roman history with our
guests. We spent time in Dewa and in the amphitheatre.
2. Around school: Meeting Mrs Longville
After a tour of the site our visitors were greeted by some of our Year
10 students. Scones and other refreshments were shared and greetings and
gifts exchanged.
3. Around school:
Our visiting students spent several lessons with their hosts joining in
with the lessons across the school. A special lesson was arranged where
Mr Coupe and the group composed a simple piece of music and played many
instruments as accompaniment. This was a fun session with much laughter
being heard.
4. Oswestry:
As part of the official activities the group were shown around Oswestry
by guides from The Heritage Centre. At the end of the tour they arrived
at the Guild Hall and spent time with our newly elected Lord
Mayor Channon.
5. Powys Castle
To learn more about the history of the area a visit to Powys Castle was
arranged and the teachers enjoyed an afternoon touring the house and
relaxing in the gardens.
6. Working together
Our joint project looked at “Dialogue” and how each of the linked
schools had their own identity and religious beliefs. Each school
learned more about the religions of other countries. A video had been
prepared by students in Germany and shown to all involved. Posters were
worked on together in a joint work session ready to be displayed in the
hall at out International evening.
7. Our final evening
The culmination of the visit was an International evening to which many
members of the local community, families and Lord Mayor Channon had been
invited to. Marches students gave up their evening to put together an
evening of musical entertainment. Our Turkish students had prepared
several dances to show aspects of their diverse culture.
The evening ended with everyone on stage dancing to Turkish music and
following the steps of one of the simpler Turkish dances as shown by Mr
Abiyik.
This project ends this year but friendships have developed that will
last long into the future.
