Enterprise and Careers Day

On Thursday 20th June, the whole of Year 10 at the Marches School enjoyed an exciting Enterprise and Careers Day which involved 32 volunteers from 18 businesses.

The day started with an interesting assembly talk from Ian Davies from Atlantic Mavericks, who  is rowing the Atlantic with three crew members in December. Ian brought in his boat, which the students really enjoyed learning about, and had the opportunity to climb on and look inside the tiny cabins.

Other activities included interactive workshops delivered by National Citizen Service, Department for Work and Pensions, Wrexham Glyndwr University, The University of Law, Aberystwyth University, North Shropshire College and Doncaster’s. The organisations and students also took part in a speed networking event, which was designed to encourage students to talk to the visitors for 5 minutes at a time, to learn about the business and roles within.

We are thankful to the many companies who kindly attended the event, these included: Higher Horizons+, Bentley Motors (who brought in two cars), BT, Tute Education, Aico, Hunter Bevan, The Royal Navy, The Field Studies Council, Harper Adams and Atlantic Mavericks.

Mrs Murphy, Careers Guidance and Inspiration Officer for The Marches School commented ‘It was a great day, enjoyed by students and volunteers. I think it is so important that students are able to engage with employers, ask questions and gain an understanding of the wide range of jobs and opportunities available to them. We are so grateful to all the companies that are involved in these events and really appreciate the time they take out from their busy roles to make a difference to these young people.’
