Marches Netball side makes history

The Under 19 Netball side at the Marches School have made history, as they became North Shropshire Netball Champions for the first time.

Ellesmere College hosted the tournament and with winning the tournament in every year since 2014, they began as strong to claim the crown and surpass Oswestry School in most tournament victories.

The Marches School began the tournament against a strong Oswestry School side, and as they were a new side playing together for the first time, they were behind 7-2 at half time. Following a much more confident second half, with strong shooting and excellent tactical play in defence, the Marches School rallied to win the match by a single point 10-9.

They then faced off against Ellesmere College and played with much more understanding as a team, defeating the favourites in a very competitive match 11-9. They then played Thomas Adams School and were beneficial to their own ever-increasing confidence, defeating the Wem-based school 16-3.

Being the only side to win all three games, the girls brought the North Shropshire U19 Netball Shield to the Marches School Sixth Form for the very first time.

Mrs Sian Newey, Coach of the Team and Year 11 Progress Leader at the Marches School, commented: “The girls did superbly well to come back from being so far behind in their first game, with the new squad playing together for the first time. The squad of 12 were so well knit, working hard together and they stood up to the challenge that they were faced with. The girls represented their school and the Marches Sixth Form fantastically well. Having only started the Sixth Form in 2014, we have an excellent enrichment programme to ensure that sporting talent goes fulfilled whilst studying here.”

The Marches Sixth Form is hosting an Open Evening on Wednesday 24th October. To register for the event, please follow this link: http://marchesschool.co.uk/event/sixth-form-open-evening-3/.
