Year 11 President’s Shield
The Marches School 3-1 The Burton Borough School
“Another outstanding performance, in front of a bumper, period 5 crowd saw the boys at The Marches progress into the next round yet again.
As has been a bit of a theme this year, the boys had to stand up to some difficult tackling from the opposition. Along with the result, the conduct of the boys wearing the ‘M’ on their chest is the most pleasing thing about being involved with this team.
The boys started really brightly – no sign of an over indulgent festive period for any of the players – especially the wingers. Max Thomas was speeding down the right and Talismanic Tom, spinning his web down the left – the only problem in the opening 15 minutes was that we failed to capitalise and could not force the opening goal.
It eventually came, following a goal mouth scramble where it seemed like every player had a scuffed shot – the ball was finally bundled over the line by (I think) Billy Clarke- I was too busy celebrating with the crowd to pay full attention.
Credit to Burton – the last part of the 1st half was certainly dominated by them, they made this late pressure pay with the equaliser, the big centre half heading home a free kick. By half time we were relieved to be on level terms.
The boys stepped up again in the second half, buoyed on by the cheering spectators. There was a heated battle in the centre of midfield that even saw the usually ice cool Charlie Morris lose his composure for a moment. Alongside Olly and the fleet-footed Toby the 3 midfield generals definitely won this mini battle.
15 minutes to play – step up the hero of the day – fresh from his ICT exam, still getting changed on the touchline – Drew Brennan was thrust into the heat of the battle, within a blink he had scored twice, blasting both shots left footed straight into the corner of the net. 3-1, game over!
Handshakes at full time and another hard earned victory, something special is building with this team and I am convinced there is silverware coming this season”.
