Our Year 11 students took part in our POWER UP! to GCSE Day a fantastic opportunity to boost confidence, skills and wellbeing as we head into the final stretch before exams.

Throughout the day, students explored a range of powerful strategies to support success, including:

🧠 The science behind effective revision
😴 The importance of sleep for memory and focus
πŸ’ Stress‑management and wellbeing tools
πŸ“ Practical exam techniques to maximise marks

We were also delighted to welcome Karim Al‑Abbas from Enlighten Education, who delivered an inspiring workshop on the incredible power of the brain. Students learned how to create meaningful, effective mind maps and left feeling motivated and empowered to take charge of their learning.

Here’s to a confident, focused run‑up to GCSEs.

πŸ–ΌοΈπŸ“ Revision Technique #6: Dual Coding πŸ“πŸ–ΌοΈ

Combine words and visuals for the ultimate memory boost! Dual Coding helps you learn by pairing information with images, making it easier to understand and recall.

Here’s how to use Dual Coding:
1️⃣ Pick a Topic: Choose a subject or concept you’re revising.
2️⃣ Create Visuals: Turn key points into diagrams, charts, drawings, or timelines.
3️⃣ Label and Connect: Add short descriptions or keywords to your visuals to link them to the content.

Why it works:
πŸ”Έ Engages both your visual and verbal memory systems.
πŸ”Έ Simplifies complex information.
πŸ”Έ Makes revision more interactive and fun!

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: Don’t worry about being an artist - simple sketches or stick figures work just as well. Use color-coding to highlight connections between ideas!

Try Dual Coding this week to bring your revision to life!

"As a parent, one of the questions that’s always been at the back of my mind is, what if my child struggles when they move into secondary school? πŸ’›

Watching this short animation really reassured me. Across The Marches Academy Trust, there is a strong, joined‑up support system in place to help every child feel safe, supported and able to succeed.

From the support built into everyday mainstream lessons, through to more personalised help and full interventions when needed, children are never left to struggle alone. The Learning for Life framework means staff know our children well and can put the right support in place at the right time.

It’s comforting to know that whether a child needs a little extra help, targeted support, or more specialist intervention, there is a clear pathway and a team around them every step of the way 🌱

If you’re a parent wondering what support looks like as your child grows and transitions through school, this is well worth a watch."

πŸ‘‰ Watch the animation to find out more and see how every child is supported to thrive.

⚽ Year 11 Shropshire Cup Success - Wrekin College 1–4 The Marches ⚽

A strong away performance saw the Marches progress to the next round of the Shropshire Cup after a hard‑fought win in tricky conditions.

The team started brightly and, after sustained pressure, took a deserved lead when Cal Pugh’s cross was neatly turned home by Jayden Draper. The hosts responded before half time, capitalising on a spell of pressure to level the score.

The second half was all Marches. Jayden added his second with a well‑placed header, Josh Taaffe scored in his trial role as central striker, and Kai marked his first touch as a substitute with a bullet header to seal a dominant performance.

🧠🌟 Revision Technique #5: Mind Mapping 🌟🧠

Need a creative way to organize your ideas? Mind Mapping is a fantastic technique to visualize your knowledge and make connections between key concepts.

Here’s how to create a mind map:
1️⃣ Start with the Topic: Write the main topic in the center of the page and circle it.
2️⃣ Branch Out: Draw lines to key ideas or subtopics, connecting them to the main topic.
3️⃣ Add Details: For each branch, add smaller branches with supporting details, examples, or explanations.
4️⃣ Get Creative: Use colours, images, and symbols to make your mind map memorable and engaging.

Why it works:
πŸ”Έ Helps you see the "big picture" and relationships between ideas.
πŸ”Έ Engages both sides of your brain for better understanding.
πŸ”Έ A fun and flexible way to review any subject!

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: After making your mind map, use it to explain the topic out loud to someone else - it’s a great way to reinforce your learning!

Start mapping your way to success this week!

🌿 Eco Club Update

Our Eco Club members have been busy recycling containers from The Bailey Head public house and transforming them into colourful planters. The group were challenged to design interesting features using a range of materials and outdoor paint, and they have done a brilliant job.

The planters will be used to create wildflower spots around the school to complement our plot by the fitness suite and to encourage even more biodiversity on site.

Pictured getting creative are Natalie Arnold, Erin Harris and Seffy Wooley. πŸŒΌπŸ’š

🎼 Music for Stage and Screen

Following a fantastic trip to Birmingham Symphony Hall, our students were treated to an incredible performance of music from stage and screen.

Here is what Lucy Hawley had to say about the experience:

β€œI really enjoyed our trip to Birmingham Symphony Hall! The different songs all sounded amazing and the orchestra and soloists were incredible. I love the mix of songs from stage and screen and it was great to hear them performed by a full orchestra.” 🎢✨
